I really disagree with this take on the film but I’m very glad you wrote it!

Interesting take! As a brown person, I think the fact that the black and brown characters kept saving Leo was kind of hilarious but in a self aware way? Forgive me if this is reaching as this is apples and oranges but it made me think about how people of color are portrayed in some of these year's other "blockbusters" and obviously much of it isn't great, and I'm not saying we should take crumbs but the portrayals here (at least of Benicio's character for example) at least highlight the fact that Leo truly would have gotten nowhere without his help. When I think about that vs say how Bad Bunny and Marcello Hernandez character's are portrayed in Happy Gilmore, it's like well here's some representation that doesn't feel demoralizing and actually feels celebratory of these characters. ( I know the comparison is flawed since Happy Gilmore is not awards seasons fodder by any means but as far as budget and whatnot, where Adam Sandler goes Netflix will surely follow with an obscene amount of cash. Same as Leo. And yeah Happy Gilmore is slapstick comedy but I would have preferred more jokes about poop and farting than to have the only two brown characters in the movie partake in the played out joke of not speaking or understanding English in the year of our Lorde 2025.)

Completely agree about marketing and the letterboxation of it all. I remember when Barbie came out I felt like a bad feminist because everyone and their mom was loving it all over social media and my sister and I looked at each other after the movie and went, did they watch the same movie we did?

Thanks for the review though! I love disagreeing with people about films lol
